England legend Wayne Rooney is considering the possibility of returning to the United States as manager of his former club DC United.

The Washington-based team are in the process of finding a new permanent manager to replace the interim coach Chad Ashton, who has been there since April.

Rooney, 36, who left Derby County a fortnight ago after a year-and-half in charge, had two seasons at DC United at the end of his playing career.

He enjoyed living in America, although his family were keen to return to the UK at the end of his period there.

A spokesman for Rooney said: “A number of discussions have taken place with clubs — both at home and abroad — interested in the possibility of Wayne becoming their manager.

“Wayne remains interested in projects that excite him whilst continuing to develop his skills and knowledge as a manager.

“At this stage, no decision or agreement has been made with any club.”

Rooney, who was praised for his work at Derby during a period of unprecedented turmoil for the club off the field, hopes to observe elite coaches in other sports as part of his development.
