Osimhen must sign a new Napoli deal till 2027 before Galatasaray move
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen's loan move to Galatasaray is being delayed because his parent club want him to sign a contract extension till 2027.
According to multiple reports, Osimhen will have to sign a new contract with Napoli before accepting the loan move to Galatasaray.
Everybody would seem to agree and it is a done deal, with the striker joining Galatasaray on a dry loan – without option to buy – for free, as long as they cover his salary of nearly €11m per season.
Considering the alternative was for him to sit in the stands until the transfer market reopens in January, this was the only real option for all of them to accept.
However, it is not quite done yet, because Napoli wants some guarantees that their investment is safe.
The contract that Osimhen signed in December 2023 only runs to June 2026, because all parties had intended for him to be sold this summer.
When the talks with Al-Ahli and Chelsea fell apart on deadline day, they were both left frustrated and furious.
If he was to go on loan now and return in June 2025, there would be only one year left on the contract, giving Napoli a very weak negotiating position for a sale.
So before Osimhen is allowed to fly out for a medical, which could be as early as this evening, then he must first sign an extension with Napoli to June 2027 at the same terms.
There is also a rush to get this done because while the transfer window in Turkey is open until September 13, Galatasaray need to hand in their squad list to UEFA on Tuesday for the Europa League.
Napoli director of sport Manna also told Sports Digitale in Turkey: “It is correct to say we are in talks with Galatasaray and we are close to an agreement.”
Osimhen was also enthusiastic about the idea of joining Galatasaray, faced with the prospect of having to sit in the stands until the transfer window opens in January.
Napoli were adamant he would not be welcomed back into the squad, also because they insist it was the Nigeria international who declared months ago he no longer wanted to play for them.
He will be reunited with former Partenopei teammate Dries Mertens in Istanbul.
Although Osimhen had wanted a Champions League team, he will still be able to compete in the Europa League with Galatasaray, who are facing Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax in the tournament.
