Galaxy Football Club of Onitsha on Sunday at Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Awka Road, Onitsha, defeated Mourinho Football Club also of Onitsha to win the first of the Onitsha Unity Cup.

Sunday's match was the climax of the tournament that started about ten weeks ago with several teams from Onitsha and its environs participating.

No sooner had the match started at 3.30 pm that Chukuma Ukor scored the first goal of the match for Galaxy Football Club.

Before the ink that the match officials used to win the goal dried Ubelika Nwalioba equalized for Mourinho Football Club. The first half ended 1-1.

On resumption, after the 15 minutes, half-time break both sides made spirited efforts to score the winning goal but their efforts were futile and the match ended 1-1.

The match had to be decided by penalty kicks. Players from Galaxy Football Club were able to bury their kicks while players from Mourinho Football Club could not find the back of the net. The match eventually ended 5-2 in favour of Galaxy Football Club who smiled home with the One Million Naira cash prize for the winner.   

But Mourinho Football Club found consolation in their star player Moses Uche being adjudged the best player of the tournament while Galaxy Football Club Christian Mmaduagwuna of Galaxy Football Club was adjudged the best goalkeeper.

Mercy Nwosu a female footballer commended members of the Onitsha Ex-Footballers in the Diaspora for the great initiative.

Nwosu urged corporate bodies in Onitsha to support the initiative to make it bigger and better, she also urged members of the Onitsha Ex-Footballers in the Diaspora to include a women's edition in the 2023 tournament,

“ What they have done is highly commendable, I pray other organizations we have in Onitsha will join and start similar tournaments because we have a lot of talented young players in Onitsha waiting for a tournament like this to showcase their talents. The only improvement I want is for them to introduce women's tournament in the 2023 edition, there are many young and highly talented women footballers in Onitsha and it environs looking for a tournament like this to showcase our talents” said Nwosu
