Onana fine after car crash

Cameroon and Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana is thought to be okay after reportedly being involved in what appeared to be a horror car crash while on his way to training for his national side.

The shot-stopper was en route to meet up with his Cameroon teammates when the incident occurred.

Onana was allegedly travelling from Cameroon's capital city Yaounde to his country’s training camp in Douala on Tuesday morning when his car was seriously damaged.

Reports have since emerged that the 25-year-old is safe and well, while a video uploaded to Twitter appears to show Onana up on his feet and talking to other people involved in the crash.

No casualties have been reported though the cars involved are likely to be written-off.

The incident is unlikely to rule Onana out of Cameroon's upcoming World Cup play-off qualifying clash against Algeria.

The Indomitable Lions were arguably underwhelmed at the recent Africa Cup of Nations. Onana was between the sticks as they reached the final four, but were beaten by Egypt on penalties at the semi-final stage.

They did have something to shout about in the end as Cameroon toppled Burkina Faso in the tournament's third-place play off, again via a penalty shootout. At club level, Onana's future remains up in the air given he confirmed he would not be penning an extension with Dutch giants Ajax.

He first joined the club in 2016 and has won two Eredivisie titles alongside two Dutch FA Cups and was one game away from winning the 2017 Europa League but Ajax were toppled by Manchester United in the final. Onana's current deal expires at the end of the season.

The Cameroon Football Association said Onana eventually joined up with the squad in Douala after the crash and was "fine," although he would have a precautionary examination at the hospital.

Cameroon hosts Algeria in the first leg of their World Cup playoff in Douala on Friday. The second leg in Algeria is next Tuesday and the winner of the tie will be one of five African teams to clinch a place at the World Cup in Qatar this year.

National broadcaster CRTV published pictures of what it said was the crash site.

They showed a Range Rover SUV and another vehicle with their front ends crushed after what appeared to be a head-on collision. It's unclear if the 25-year-old Onana was driving or a passenger in the Range Rover.
