Rivers United put five goals past Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM) to further compound Olukoya Boys' woes in their quest to avoid a drop to NNL. Nelson Ezor opened by scoring 17th minutes into the game to help calm the frayed nerves of coach Stanley Eguma who wanted his players to settle down to serious business early enough.
MFM held on to avoid a route but not for too long as Chijioke Akuneto doubled Rivers' lead at an additional time before the game went on break.
The second half resumed with MFM working round the clock to get themselves back into the game but Chijioke grabbed a brace two minutes into the second half to keep the game beyond the reach of their visitors.
George Akpabio put the ice on the cake with Rivers' fourth goal of the evening in the 84th minute while Ishaya Kayode completed the rout with another in added time to open a seven-point gap at the top after Plateau United stumbled in Lafia following their disappointing 2-1 loss to Nasarawa United.
Gombe United defeated Sunshine 1-0 while Pillars laboured to a 2-1 win oner Kwara United at the Sani Abacha Stadium. Lobi Stars recorded their ninth win of the season with a 2-1 win over Kastina United in Markurdi while Shooting Stars defeated Tornadoes 1-0 in Ibadan.
The only draw of the day came from faraway Uyo as the never-say-die Enyimba side grabbed a late equaliser to share the spoils with Akwa United at the Nest of Champions.
