NPFL: River United title hope dented by Niger Tornadoes

Niger Tornadoes boosted their survival hopes and threw the title race in the Nigeria Professional Football League wide open with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over leaders Rivers United on Thursday.

The decisive moment came through Terdoo Shimagande, whose solitary strike secured all three points for the hosts in a tightly contested encounter.

The result represents a major setback for Rivers United, who have struggled to maximise their previously outstanding fixtures.

With all backlog matches now settled, the standings at the top have tightened significantly, leaving only fine margins between the leading contenders.

With eight games remaining, the title race has taken on a new dimension. Rivers United still lead the table with 52 points, but their advantage is now slender, sitting just one point ahead of Rangers International on 51 points.

Ikorodu City remain firmly in the hunt in third place with 48 points, while Nasarawa United and Shooting Stars SC are level on 47 points in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In total, just five points separate the top five teams after 30 matches — a remarkably tight gap at this stage of the season.

Even more telling is that only two points divide second from fifth, underlining how quickly the standings could shift with each round of fixtures.

For Niger Tornadoes, the victory could prove crucial in their bid to climb away from relegation danger.

For Rivers United, however, the pressure is intensifying as rivals close in, setting up a thrilling and unpredictable run-in to the NPFL title.
