NPFL: Rangers vows not underrate opponent in Champions League as Akwa United begins screening
Rangers head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu has said the Flying Antelopes won’t take lightly their opponent in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions were drawn with Comoros club, Union Sportive Zilimadjou on Thursday.
Ilechukwu cautioned that there are no small teams on the continent again.
“No team is a small team in the continent anymore. We respect our opponents in the CAF Champions League,” Ilechukwu stated.
Rangers will travel to Moroni, the capital of the island of Comoros, to take on their champions on August 16, 17, or 18 with the return leg in Enugu a week later.
The winner will face either St Louis of Mauritius or Angola’s GDSE in the second preliminary round.
Meanwhile, Akwa United has announced an open screening for players willing to join the club.
The screening program is aimed at selecting the best legs for the club ahead of the new season.
The exercise will run from Monday, July 15th to Monday 22nd at 8 pm daily.
The program will take place at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Akwa United are planning on bolstering their squad ahead of the new campaign.
The Promise Keepers failed to live up to expectations last season.
They finished the season in 16th position with 49 points.
And Abia Warriors players and officials have embarked on a 10-day break in preparation for the new Nigeria Premier Football League season.
The players and their officials are expected to resume on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
The team has been waiting for the planned reception by the state government to appreciate its feat of making it to the final of the President Federation Cup.
Chairman of the club, John Obuh commended the players for reaching the finals of the competition.
Obuh encouraged the players to redouble their efforts ahead of the new season as expectations from fans and followers of the club would be higher.
It will be recalled that Abia Warriors appointed Imama Amapakabo as the new head coach on Wednesday.
