NPFL: Enyimba spank Gombe as Plateau United, Pillars stumble

By Olusola Adebayo

Enyimba FC was rampant on Saturday afternoon at the Enyimba Stadium as the Aba lord scored three unreplied  first-half goals to spank Gombe United 3-0 while Plateau United and Kano Pillar stumble in their bid to catch up with Rivers United and escape relegation respectively

Enyimba needed to respond after a disappointing outing in Ibadan last weekend where they lost 2-0 to Shooting Stars of Ibadan and that's what they did against Gombe in the Nigeria Professional Football League matchday 25.

The Aba team started without arm brakes as Mbaoma missed a one on one with Gombe United goalkeeper Kazeem Yekini in the 2nd minute.

Mbaoma set Emeka Obioma on goal three minutes later but the striker shot wide.

It took less than 60 seconds for Obioma to make amends as he shot Enyimba ahead in the 6th minute, a deserved lead for the Finidi led boys after they practically dominated play forth the first 360 seconds of play.

Mbaoma was the on target in the 16th minute to register his 11th of the season after he finished off an interchange of passes between him and Obioma with aplomb.

Cyril Olisema got Enyimba's third goal in the 29th minute after the Aba survived a scare from Gombe United in the 20th minute with Samuel Oyediji missing a sitter with only John Noble at his mercy.

After the half-hour mark, Enyimba has gotten the job done as they went into the break with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Gombe United came back in the second half with a seal to get one back and then negotiate a second and probably seek a great comeback but the two times CAF Champions League winner were up to the task and defended neatly to record another clean sheet in Aba.

In Uyo, Plateau United was second best as the Fidelis Ilechukwu boys left the cool city empty-handed while Dakkada ran away with the maximum points to boost their relegation survival battle.

Emmanuel Charles heads home after Ekerette Udom's initial header crashed against the bar off Etido Dan's cross.

Kano Pillars succumbed to two second-half goals in Minna as Niger Tornadoes came from behind to snatch all the three points and compound Kano Pillars woos in the relegation zone.

Rabiu Ali shot pillars into the lead from the penalty spot but Jonah got the equaliser eight minutes before the hour mark while Musa Wakili broke the Mai Su Gida fan's heart at the dot of 90 minutes to end the match on a 2-1 victory for the home side.
