Rafael Nadal is looking ahead to the 2022 French Open final, when he could extend his record by winning a 22nd Grand Slam title, although he is aware there are other priorities in life.

The Spaniard has opened up in recent weeks about his chronic foot injury, explaining how he is constantly living in pain and he spoke about this after his semi-final against Alexander Zverev, when the German had to retire with an ankle injury of his own.

"I would prefer to lose Sunday's final and get a new foot," Nadal said afterwards.

"I would be happy in my life with a new foot. A win is beautiful, but life is much more important than any title, especially after the career that I had."

Nadal also went on to discuss the match against Zverev and wished his injured opponent all the best.

"It was very tough and very sad for him, honestly, he was playing an unbelievable tournament," the Spaniard said.

"I know how much he's fighting to win a Grand Slam but for the moment he was very unlucky. The only thing is I'm sure he's going to win not one, much more than one.

"It's one of the biggest challenges on the tour when he's playing at this super high level.

"I was in the medical room with him before we came back on court and to see him crying there is a very tough moment so all the best to him. I wish him a very fast recovery
