Nigeria-born German star Jamal Musiala scored the goal that secured Bayern Munich their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title on Saturday.

Bayern and Musiala work was made easy by another Nigeria-born player Karim Onisiwo whose second goal for Mainz ensured that Borussia Dortmund who were leader until the final day played a 2-2 drawn. Dortmund needed a win to be crowned champion.

Musiala perhaps won’t score a more important goal in his career and speaking after the game, Musiala spoke of the incredible moment and his emotions.

“It’s definitely an amazing feeling,” said Musiala. “After our struggles this season, to actually win the league is amazing. It was an incredible moment. I didn’t think too much about it, I just celebrated it. It took at least a minute until I checked it.

“I had to give everything, we had nothing to lose. It wasn’t a good season for us, we know that, of course. We are extremely happy to have won the title, though. We are going to really celebrate now.”

After Köln’s Dejan Ljubicic equalised from the spot in the 81st minute, the Bundesliga title was heading to Dortmund. That was until Musiala scored a winner for Bayern in the final minute, with a superb solo effort that found its way past Marvin Schwäbe in front of the travelling Bayern support.

Musiala enjoyed an excellent season with 12 goals and 13 assists in 33 Bundesliga games. The Germany international has arguably been Bayern’s best player this season in a campaign that has included some below-par performances from the Rekordmeister.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother, he was raised from the age of seven in England. Musiala represented both Germany and England at youth level, and eventually pledged his allegiance to the Germany national team for future games in February 2021, representing the side at UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Mainz striker Onisiwo was born in Austria to a Nigerian father and an Austrian mother. He made his debut for the senior Austria squad as a substitute, in a friendly against Switzerland in November 2015.

He joined German side FSV Mainz 05 in 2016. He scored his first hat-trick for the club in January 2023 in a game against VfL Bochum.
