Moratti says Lukaku was a rip-off for Inter

Former Inter president Massimo Moratti was unimpressed with the return of Romelu Lukaku and backed coach Simone Inzaghi.

The 29-year-old Belgian striker has only made five Nerazzurri appearances this season since returning on an €8m loan deal from Chelsea, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Lukaku has mostly been sidelined this season with a hamstring injury, an issue that forced him to miss Belgian’s World Cup opener against Canada.

Speaking on Gianluca Rossi’s YouTube channel, Moratti first gave his thoughts on Lukaku’s return to Inter in the summer.

“We almost forgot the fact that Inter are doing without the player they had based everything on, Lukaku. A big rip-off, he has practically never played.”

He commented on president Steven Zhang’s desire to retain Inter, despite rumours that he’s looking for a buyer.

“Yes, that’s the situation. And I think it is also the best choice, as every change is a big shock for any club. The longer the same owners stay, the better.”

The former Nerazzurri president backed coach Inzaghi, who has been criticised by some this season.

“There are a few aches and pains, but he’s fine. I think this break can be good for all teams. I don’t think there is a need for big signings, although I notice they are all working hard anyway.”

Finally, Moratti discussed the possibility of seeing Inzaghi dismissed this season.

“To make certain decisions you have to be inside, the human aspect counts. You have to have the alternative ready. From the outside you think as a fan and you can make certain thoughts. But Inzaghi is good and Inter also play well.”

The 29-year-old Lukaku is hoping to make his first start since August in Belgium’s final World Cup group game against Croatia on December 1.
