Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has apologised for the club's relegation to the Championship.

The 26-year-old posted a message to supporters on Instagram after City dropped down to the second tier on the final day of the season. He has joined teammates Ricardo Pereira, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans in addressing City fans publicly.

Ndidi offered his "sincerest apologies" for the team failing to beat the drop, admitting he was "gutted" that City were unable to retain their status as a Premier League club. He says the team "deeply regret" letting down the Blue Army.

"I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for the team's relegation," Ndidi wrote. "Gutted that we couldn’t make it in the end.

Meanwhile, Ndidi’s apology has split opinion among Leicester City supporters.

While some Leicester supporters were grateful Ndidi explicitly apologised for City's abject season, others were more cynical about the level of meaning behind the midfielder's post.

Other players have commented about City's fall from grace, and here is how supporters greeted Ndidi's effort

@ninety_six96 : Not the first statement but the first to apologise.

@SweeneySean_ : I guess if players do a nice apology, all is good. Actions speak louder the words. Rather they stay off social media unless they are saying they are committed to next season.

@LestahSam : Ndidi’s apology is the type of thing I was after. Sincere, realises it’s not good enough, no lies or skin-saving. Let’s hope more of them follow suit.

@baxterlcfc : Ndidi the first to apologise. Keep him.

@ollieg21296 : People going on about Ndidi’s apology as if a PR company didn’t write every single word.

@Lcfc_T2000 : Ndidi spent four years getting a university degree and couldn’t even write his own apology. Please leave my club ASAP.
