Raising football star Marc Cucurella has told Brighton & Hove Albion that he wants to leave for Manchester City.

City have offered more than £30 million for the left back but Brighton do not need to sell him and have made clear that their £50 million valuation must be met. City and Chelsea have scouted Cucurella, who signed a contract until 2026 when he joined for £15.4 million from Getafe last summer.

Brighton, who declined to comment on whether Cucurella had lodged a formal transfer request, were also insistent that Arsenal met their £50 million valuation for Ben White, the centre back, last summer.

Pep Guardiola, the City manager, refused to speak directly about Cucurella at his press conference before Saturday’s Community Shield match against Liverpool. “He is a Brighton player, I cannot say anything else,” Guardiola said.

The Catalan insists he has enough cover in the left-back position if the club do not sign a replacement for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who left for Arsenal. Guardiola was impressed by the performances of Josh Wilson-Esbrand, the 19-year-old left back, on the club’s pre-season tour of America.
“If [we do not sign another left back], we stay with what we have,” he said. “We have enough players who can play there. João [Cancelo] can play there, Josh can play there, Nathan [Aké] can play there. I never complain about the squad I have since the first season.”

Guardiola also revealed that Aymeric Laporte, the centre back, would miss at least the first matches of the season. “Laporte is injured,” he said. “He has had knee surgery.

“In the last two or three games of last season, he had an injury. He made an incredible effort. He had surgery, and so far he is doing really well but you have to be careful with a knee injury. I think he will be out in August. In September I think maybe he will start training with us.” Community Shield: Haaland is ready to take on Liverpool

Manchester City new signing Erling Haaland suffered from “niggles and a few problems” after arriving from Borussia Dortmund but scored in his first appearance for Manchester City against Bayern Munich last weekend.

And the Norwegian is ready to play for City in the traditional curtain-raiser.

Guardiola said: “He’s ready to play tomorrow, and the first impression as a guy is really good, a funny guy. He’s settled really well with the team. That is important.

“Apparently people think it’s not one of the most important things but it is… the good vibes in the locker room is more important than any advice or any other thing you can say.

“We try to settle good with the family, house, try to get to know each other in training, we can see what we want to do, what we did in previous seasons. The rest the quality will do the rest.”
