Man City blew three goals lead; Arsenal shows class in Lisbon as Bayern beats PSG
Manchester City’s extraordinary season lurched to another low as they gave up a three-goal lead in the final 20 minutes, while Arsenal pumped five past Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday.
City, who play Liverpool in a decisive Premier League match this weekend, were cruising and thinking ahead to that fixture before they were shocked by Feyenoord.
Manchester City have conceded two or more goals in six successive matches in all competitions for the first time since May 1963 – during a season in which they were relegated from the top flight. This is now five losses and a draw from those six matches and it immediately follows the gobsmacking 4-0 loss to Tottenham last weekend.
The result saw City become the first team in Champions League history to lead a match by three goals as late as the 75th minute and fail to go on to win.
“Conceding the way City did at the weekend and three again tonight, they look weak, they look light, they look frail,” said former England striker Alan Shearer on BBC.
“Even with two minutes to go and 3-2 up, they take a quick free-kick. Why? Kill the game. They were in such a comfortable position.”
City’s former defender Gael Clichy added: “I am lost for words. Going forward you need to be given freedom but for defenders, there are rules you must follow.
Arsenal extended their revival with a ruthless 5-1 rout of Sporting Lisbon to bolster their bid to reach the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday. Mikel Arteta's side ended a three-match winless run in all competitions by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the Premier League last weekend. And the Gunners built on that success with an even more dynamic display at the Jose Alvalade stadium. Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal an early lead and Kai Havertz increased their advantage before Gabriel Magalhaes struck just before half-time.
Goncalo Inacio got one back for Sporting, but Bukayo Saka's penalty underlined the gulf in class between the teams.
Leandro Trossard netted late on to give Arsenal five away goals in a Champions League game for the first time since 2008.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich battled past 10-man Paris St Germain 1-0 in the Champions League thanks to Kim Min-jae's winner on Tuesday to improve their chances of automatic qualification and leave the visitors, who saw Ousmane Dembele dismissed for a lunging tackle that brought a second booking in the 57th minute, in trouble after a third loss in the competition.
Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski scored twice as the hosts cruised to a 3-0 win over French side Brest, with the Polish striker joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only players to pass the 100 goals mark in the competition.
Lewandowski put Barca ahead after being fouled by goalkeeper Marco Bizot and converting from the spot in the 10th minute before Dani Olmo got their second after dribbling past two defenders, with Lewandowski wrapping up the win in added time.
Bayer Leverkusen got their campaign back on track with a 5-0 home win over RB Salzburg, with Florian Wirtz scoring twice and the visitors having goalkeeper Alexander Schlager to thank for avoiding an even bigger defeat.
Leverkusen, beaten 4-0 at Liverpool in their last game, raced into an early lead with Wirtz scoring from the penalty spot in the eighth minute and Alejandro Grimaldo netting from a free kick three minutes later.
Wirtz scored again on the half-hour as Leverkusen threatened to run riot Patrik Schick added a fourth goal 16 minutes after the break and Aleix Garcia rounded off the win 18 minutes from time.
An own goal by RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba gave Inter Milan a 1-0 home win as the Italian champions provisionally moved top of the standings.
Inter took the lead in the 27th minute after Lukeba turned the ball into Leipzig's net following Federico Dimarco's free kick.
Unbeaten Inter tops the table with 13 points from five games, one point above second-placed Barcelona and then Liverpool.
Atalanta claimed a 6-1 victory away to Young Boys while in the early kick-offs, Argentina forward Julian Alvarez and substitute Angel Correa scored two goals each while Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann added to the feast as Atletico Madrid thumped hosts Sparta Prague 6-0 while AC Milan earned their third successive win with a 3-2 victory at Slovan Bratislava.
