Lagos set for Nigeria's first wheelchair American football exhibition

Nigeria is set to host its first wheelchair American football exhibition on 10 September 2026, with organisers seeking to use the event to promote inclusion and create greater opportunities for persons with disabilities through sport.
The exhibition, organised by American Football for Elite Development (AFEDEV), will take place at the Outdoor Basketball Arena of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, from 10 a.m.
The event will introduce wheelchair American football to Nigerian sports fans and stakeholders while highlighting the potential of adaptive sports to promote participation, leadership and community development.
Joseph Orie, Media Director of AFEDEV, said the exhibition is expected to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to gain a better understanding of wheelchair American football and its potential to expand sporting opportunities for persons with disabilities.
He said government agencies, diplomatic missions, corporate organisations, educational institutions, disability organisations, development partners and members of the media have been invited to attend the event.
Wheelchair American football is an adapted form of American football that allows people with physical disabilities to participate in the sport. The game retains key elements of American football while adapting aspects of play to accommodate athletes using wheelchairs.
The Lagos exhibition is expected to provide a platform for demonstrations of the sport while encouraging conversations around accessibility, inclusion and participation in Nigerian sports.
According to AFEDEV, the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to promote American football and adaptive sports development in Nigeria.
