Kishane Thompson opens his season with 6.48 seconds in the 60m at Spanish Town

Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson made a riveting return to the track with 6.48 seconds in the 60m at Spanish Town.

After his historic silver medal at the Paris Olympics, the Jamaican sensation now targets the summit on a golden indoor season, starting with his debut on the World Athletics circuit in Kazakhstan.

The young sprinter is one of the few athletes who managed to salvage Jamaica’s waning reputation as an athletics powerhouse in Paris. Claiming silver in the 100m, Thompson opened his 2025 campaign with a spectacular display of speed, silencing any doubters.

His performance in Spanish Town not only reaffirmed his status as one of the sport’s brightest talents but also set the tone for a season brimming with potential. Despite battling a headwind of -2.1 m/s, His 6.48-second run ranks as the fifth-fastest 60m performance ever by a Jamaican.

He now sits just 0.06 seconds shy of the national record held by Ackeem Blake, underscoring his position as a force to be reckoned with in the sprinting world.

This electrifying race marked Thompson’s first competitive outing since the unforgettable 100m final in Paris, a race that will go down as one of the closest in modern history.

The elite youngster crossed the line in 9.789 seconds, just five-thousandths of a second behind American Noah Lyles (9.784 s). Fred Kerley, also of the USA, claimed bronze in 9.81 seconds, while every finalist broke the elusive 10-second barrier, including fellow Jamaican Oblique Seville, who finished eighth with 9.91 seconds. That performance catapulted Thompson into the global spotlight, cementing his role as one of the most exciting athletes of his generation and a beacon for Jamaica’s sprinting future.

With his outdoor credentials firmly established, Thompson is now turning his focus to the indoor season. He’s set to make his debut on 25 January in Astana, Kazakhstan, at the first Gold meeting of the World Athletics Tour. In the high-stakes world of indoor sprinting—where explosiveness and precision reign supreme—he is eager to prove his dominance.

The season will culminate at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, from 21 to 23 March, where Thompson is tipped as a frontrunner for gold. With a personal best of 9.77 seconds in the 100m, the 23-year-old is no longer just a rising star—he’s a bona fide sprinting powerhouse ready to take on the world.
