Heartbreak for Barca as Nico Williams officially announces Athletic Club stay
While the reporting is that this will be a crucial week for the future of Dani Olmo with regard to a move to Barcelona, it looks as if it might actually be decisive for Nico Williams. The Basque winger was their top target, but it seems he will remain at Athletic Club.
According to Relevo, Barcelona still does not have official confirmation of his answer to their proposal, and neither has he informed Athletic of his intentions.
However, on August 12, he is due back in training with Athletic, and Los Leones feels it will be much more unlikely that he will go anywhere if he does come back.
The Blaugrana also accept that this is a deadline of sorts, and if it is to be resolved in their favour, it must be so by then. Cadena Cope are reporting that Williams has already made his mind up though. Their information is that Williams’ agent has already informed his other main suitor, Paris Saint-Germain, that his intention is to continue with Athletic next season.
The 22-year-old had the world at his feet after scoring at Euro 2024, and Barcelona made a strong play for him, but there is still no certainty on whether they could do a deal financially for Williams. The Catalan side are yet to announce any agreements that would move them back into their salary limit, and allow them to spend more freely, while only Marc Guiu and Chadi Riad have been sold.
