Florian Wirtz reveals why he snubbed Man City and Bayern Munich for Liverpool at his unveiling

Liverpool have smashed their transfer record with the £ 116 million

signing of German sensation Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, ending weeks of speculation over his future. The Reds outmanoeuvred both Bayern Munich and Manchester City to secure the services of the highly-rated playmaker.

Wirtz has opened up about his unexpected decision to join Liverpool, crediting conversations with Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes for sealing the deal after three weeks of intense negotiations. Despite initial thoughts that his future may lie elsewhere, Wirtz was quickly convinced by the Liverpool duo that Anfield was his destiny. "I feel very happy and very proud," Wirtz shared with the club's media. "Finally, it's done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy.

"I saw on Instagram and everywhere else that they (the fans) are wanting me to come, so thank you for the support. I am looking forward to playing in front of them and achieving big things together. I'm really happy to come. And sorry for the long wait!

"I just thought it was the right point in my career to make a next step. Of course, I wanted to get to a club that is the top three in the world. In my opinion, Liverpool is one of them.

"I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything that the club offers me was good. In the end, it was also easy for me to decide to come to Liverpool.

"It was not that easy for me because I'm a German player, I play for the German national team, so it was not easy for me to decide. But I think the talks with the coach (Slot), Richard (Hughes) and everybody from the start, from the very first time, were so good and it kept going like this."

"All the time I spoke to one of the club members, I felt like this is a place I want to be. In the end, I was 100 per cent convinced that I want to join Liverpool. I saw it as the best choice."
