Fernandes joins Man United's highest earners after agreeing new contract until 2027

Portugal playmaker Bruno Fernandes has agreed a new contract at Manchester United until 2027 which will make him among the best paid players at Old Trafford.

The United captain has effectively extended his current terms by a year, with an option to stay for a further season. His new contract is expected to take him beyond £300,000 per week in salary, with the likes of Marcus Rashford agreeing a new deal a year ago.

Fernandes cast doubts over his future in May when he stated that staying at the club would be down to United. At the time, it was widely reported that United would consider offers for almost all of their squad amid an overhaul under new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

But after agreeing to his new deal Fernandes said: “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester  United. I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.

“I have had so many special moments here already; hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights and lifting trophies at Wembley. But I wouldn’t have signed this contract if I didn’t believe that my best moments in a United shirt are still to come.

“From my discussions with the football leadership and manager, it is clear how determined everyone is to fight for major trophies in the years ahead. I can see  how positive the future is going to be and I am relishing leading this team forward.”

Fernandes has scored 79 goals and contributed 67 assists in his 234  appearances for the club but his future did not look straightforward last season.

“Obviously, it doesn’t just depend on me, does it?” he said in an interview last season. “A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides.”

He has completed four seasons at United after arriving from Sporting Lisbon in a deal starting at £47 million rising to £68 million depending on performance-related targets.
