Manchester United may have put their hunt for a new boss on hold — with Ralf Rangnick impressing club chiefs.

The German interim boss boasts five wins from eight league games, losing just one, and also earned the club a fourth-round FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough next week.

While performances may not have thrilled, Old Trafford chiefs have noted how he steadied the ship against a troubling backdrop.

The board are interested to see what he can achieve between now and the end of the season.

A top-four spot and qualification for next season’s Champions League will go a long way to securing him the United job on a permanent basis for the next two years.

Rangnick, 63, has started to unite what was a divided camp.

He has also dealt well with some of the egos at the club with his public statements.

Most recently he told Cristiano Ronaldo to calm down the histrionics after having a strop when subbed at Brentford.

But managers across Europe have continued to be linked with the role Rangnick is currently occupying as an interim.

The latest manager to be linked with the job is Italy boss Roberto Mancini.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, former Manchester City gaffer Mancini could be tempted with a return to the Premier League if United come calling after the World Cup qualifiers in March.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand on his FIVE podcast, Romano said: "Let’s see what happens with Roberto Mancini.

“Mancini will be busy with Italy to see what happens with the World Cup with qualifying in March, but that could be an option.

“He is tempted by the Premier League, he wants to come back to the Premier League one day. I will add his name to the list”

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Old Trafford job

Also linked with the job are Erik Ten Hag of Ajax, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers and Spanish duo Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui.
