Super Eagles and Ajax defender Calvin Bassey insists every team goes through a "shaky period" after both he and Ajax came in for criticism over recent performances.

The former Rangers defender made a big money move to the Dutch giants during the summer and has already come up against his old club in the Champions League this season, with his current side dominating the game and ultimately clinching a 4-0 victory.

However, Ajax were absolutely hammered 6-1 at home in the competition by Napoli last week and despite then winning in the league at the weekend, there has been plenty of criticism.

Dutch pundits Wim Kieft and Freek Jansen tore into Bassey as they blasted the Nigerian international for "hurting their eyes" before questioning the amount of money Ajax spent to bring him in from the Ibrox club back in July. But now, ahead of his club's game against Napoli in Italy this week, Bassey hit back as he insisted every top team and their players can have tough times to deal with.

He said: "All great teams have a little bit of a shaky period. I think we showed good character to stand tall and come through it."

On the defeat to Napoli in particular, Bassey added: "How do you think it would be after that? Of course, it was not nice. Nobody wants to be on the receiving end of it.

"But the most important thing for us is to try to wipe it clear and go because we do have quality in our team.

"We showed it a lot more near the beginning of the season, the quality we have and how we can play. It’s just about getting back to that level."
