Balogun deserves Rangers red card
Leon Balogun Red Card

The verdict among pundits in Scotland is that Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun deserved his red card at Motherwell.

The Nigerian was sent off in the 28th minute of Saturday's clash with his side leading 1-0, although his teammates managed to complete the job and win 3-1.

Nick Walsh deemed his challenge on Dean Cornelius worthy of a red card after the 33-year-old caught him on the ankle.

Assessing the incident for Sporstcene, former Rangers defender Ricky Foster agreed with the referee's call and explained why.

He said: "I think it is. It's a strong tackle, his foot rides over the top of the ball and he catches Cornelius just above the ankle.

"I think the sheer force, I don't think he has to go in with that much force. I think he was winning the ball anyway.

"I know we've seen it a few times. That angle it doesn't look great.

"I thought he could've just cleared the ball.

"I don't think he means it because his foot rolls over the ball, but when you go in with that force and catch a player that high, I think it's a red card."

It became even more contentious when, moments later, Motherwell defender Juhani Ojala only saw yellow for a similar tackle on Scott Wright.

But fellow pundit Leanne Crichton reckoned it was also the correct call.

She said: "I think this one, what's gone in favour of the yellow card is the fact that Scott Wright's turned his body and almost rolled the momentum of the challenge.

"I think it might've been very different if he'd taken a different type of touch, maybe in front of him.”
