Awcon 2022: Super Falcons to battle against South Africa's Bayana Bayana in Morocco
Nigeria vs South Africa

The group opponents for the Super Falcons of Nigeria at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations have been revealed.

At the draw ceremony conducted Friday night, the Super Falcons were drawn with their arch rivals, South Africa’s Bayana Bayana in the continental showpiece.

Four years ago when the competition was last held in Ghana in 2018, both teams were in the same group and the South Africans had an impressive 1-0 win in the Group B opening match.

They met again in the final match and played a goalless draw, even after extra time. Nigeria prevailed 4-3 on penalties.

The south Africans showed they have come of age when last year they beat the Falcons  4-2 in the final match of the six-nation invitational tournament in Lagos.

Aside from South Africa, the other countriesa drawn in the Group C are Burundi and Botswana. Hosts, Morocco are drawn in Group A against Burkina Faso, Senegal and Uganda while in Group B are Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia and Togo.

Nigeria won the Women AFCON titles in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The 2020 competition was obliterated by the covid19 pandemic. Equatorial Guinea won the competition in 2008 and 2012, but have lost their venom and dazzle in the past few years and failed to reach this year’s finals.

All four semi-finalists from the finals in Morocco, which is set for 2nd – 23rd July, will fly Africa’s flag at the 32-team FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.

The 2022 Awcon competition will run from July 2 to 23.
