Ashton posits Nottingham Forest should have had a penalty for a tackle on Awoniyi

Former EPL striker turned pundit Dean Ashton has said Nottingham Forest ought to have been awarded a penalty for a tackle against Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi in their match against Fulham on Saturday.

It is believed that Nottingham Forest complaints will take priority place in Howard Webb’s inbox as the dust settles on this weekend’s Premier League action.

It’s no surprise once again that Evangelos Marinakis is thought to be furious with what he witnessed at the City Ground on Saturday as Forest were beaten 1-0 by Fulham.

A drab game of Premier League football was once again settled by someone watching the game miles away from Stockley Park.

In fairness, the decision to award a penalty against Murillo for a foul on Andreas Pereira was probably right – but Forest could have had two penalties of their own.

The Reds were hard done by once again and in fairness, the match officials were pretty poor throughout the contest on Saturday.

Forest will have to dust themselves down ahead of a tough trip to in-form Chelsea but for now, the debate rumbles on over the contentious decisions at the weekend.

One of the big decisions from Saturday came in the first half when Awoniyi burst through to get on the end of a high ball and was seemingly kicked by Joachim Anderson.

The defender kicked the player’s foot as he was attempting to clear the ball and Awoniyi came crashing to the deck.

The referee nor the VAR were amused and the play continued to half-time where the scores remained goalless.

Ashton knows all about playing as a striker in the Premier League and he thinks Awoniyi can count himself very unlucky indeed.

He said on Ref Watch “I think that’s a penalty. Our job as strikers is to get there first, which he does. It’s a normal way that he falls and he gets lifted from the challenge and I thought that was a penalty.”
