Aftermath of unruly act, Gift Orban suspended, fined

Super Eagles and KAA Gent forward Gift Orban has been suspended for two games after he received a red card in the club’s 2-1 victory over KAS Eupen on Sunday.

Orban was also fined €1,500 as part of the sanction.

It’s the first time the 21-year-old will be sent off in 57 professional games.

The striker will serve a one-match suspension, while the other will be postponed.

Gent are expected to respond to the verdict no later than Tuesday.

Orban will miss the Buffalos league match against Royal Antwerp on Wednesday.

He is expected to return to action against RWD Molenbeek on Sunday.

Through a statement on their official website, KAA Gent have confirmed that Belgium's Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has requested a two-match suspension for Orban.

The Eagles star got his marching orders from the central referee Jan Boterberg after he pushed Eupen defender Rune Paeshuyse.

Orban has been having a tough time in recent weeks, struggling with form and injuries having missed the Super Eagles tie with São Tomé and Príncipe in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and not scoring in his last five matches for Gent.

Despite his recent struggles in front of goals, he has still managed to score 6 goals in 11 games across all competitions for the Belgian outfit.

Barcelona are the latest club who are interested in signing the embattled striker by the January transfer window.

Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and lately Serie A giants AC Milan have already been linked with the Gent striker.
