Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has expressed disappointment with the Super Eagles' performance in their 2-1 loss to Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture played on Monday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo.
"I am disappointed with the result and the performance of the team," Ikpeba said on SuperSport TV's Monday Night Football.
Monday's result saw Rwanda secure their first-ever victory over the three-time African champions, despite Nigeria already securing the top spot in the group.
Ikpeba emphasized that the Rwanda match was an opportunity for other players in the squad to prove themselves but sadly they failed to inspire confidence.
"This was a chance for the other players in the squad to show whether they are good enough to be part of the national team. Unfortunately, they failed to turn up, they didn't do well for themselves and the fans."
He added, "There is therefore a need for new players to be called up so as to create more competition in the team."
The Super Eagles struggled throughout the match, with substitute Samuel Chukwueze scoring Nigeria's only goal in the 67th minute.
Chukwueze's strike temporarily put the Eagles ahead, but Rwanda sealed their historic win with two goals.
The visitors effectively stifled Nigeria's game by disconnecting the midfield and attack.

Victor Boniface failed to provide a significant threat, while Moses Simon's efforts were thwarted by Rwanda's impressive goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari.
Rwanda's victory was largely due to its ability to capitalize on Nigeria's defensive lapses. In the 71st minute, Marie Gueulette headed past Maduka Okoye from a free kick on the right, and three minutes later, Rwanda scored its second and winning goal.
The loss, although historic for Rwanda, ultimately proved bittersweet as they failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations following Benin Republic's 0-0 draw with Libya.
On a brighter note, Ademola Lookman was nominated for the Africa Player of the Year award, alongside Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, and Ronwen Williams. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Morocco on December 16.
